US Obesity Facts
According to the CDC, obesity is a common, serious chronic disease that is increasing in adults and children in the US. Approximately 41.9% of US adults are obese and 19.7% of US children/adolescents are obese. Common obesity-related chronic diseases include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. Obesity also effects those of lower socioeconomic status and certain ethnic groups.
The wonderful body mass index (BMI) is used to determine obesity status. There are many different adult BMI calculators that can assist in finding your BMI. Before surgery in December, my BMI was 45 and my primary care provider had severe obesity listed on my history and physical. Obesity is further divided into classes:
- Class 1: BMI of 30 < 35
- Class 2: BMI of 35 < 40
- Class 3: BMI 40 or higher, sometimes categorized as severe obesity
Causes of Obesity
Obesity is complex and has many factors that can contribute to excess weight gain. Factors that can contribute to excess weight gain include eating patterns, physical activity levels, sleep routines, social determinants of health, genetics, and certain medications or illnesses.
Health Conditions Associated with Obesity
- High blood pressure and high cholesterol
- Type 2 diabetes
- Breathing problems
- Joint problems
- Gallstones and gallbladder disease
- Anxiety/depression
